CHAPTER FOURTEEN

In the library, Cece booted up the machine we usually worked on. It didn’t take her long to make her way from the public use area of the computer to the programs that ran the ship. She really did know her IT.

“Okay, this bunch here. It allows the keys to open doors. See this list?” she said. I watched it scroll past too fast to read. “That’s all the cards in use, what rooms they go to, or if they’re master keys that open more doors. Now, if we go here…”

She typed some words, the screen black save a few sentences, a few lines of code. I was used to apps and programs, not this more basic architecture.

“Huh. It won’t let me in. Requires a password,” Cece said. “If I could get in, we could track where Trudy used her card. Let me try something. I don’t want to get locked out.”

She typed a word that turned into asterisks in the little window. But the password screen remained in place.

“I’ll ask Ethan for the password,” I said.

“If that will do any good. This is some basic stuff here. Anyone working in IT should be able to access the card tracking. I mean, what if someone needed to change rooms? A card would have to be programmed for that,” she said.

“You think someone made this password protected without being authorized?” I said.

“Could be an oversight. Something to be worked on during this shakedown,” Cece said.

Maybe that’s why Trudy couldn’t track which rooms were empty? There was supposed to be a list. Where else would it come from? “If you wanted to protect this software with a password, would it be hard to do?”

“You’d have to do some coding. Frankly, for something like this, there’s a trick. You find a website where you can access their codes. Copy the lines for a password screen. Then, when you found the place within the ship’s computer programming, you could insert it. Then make up your own password,” she said.

“That doesn’t sound too hard,” I said.

“I wouldn’t attempt it. You could mess up some navigation thing or something. And it would take hours and hours to read through all the code. So not as easy as you might think,” Cece said.

Sam wandered in as we discussed the ship’s deep computer codes.

“Here’s my list. We’ve got the Andy Furbisher Band tonight. Trivia contests in a few of the bars. Also, we dug up some films. The activity directors are going to lead a sing-along for ‘West Side Story.’”

“‘West Side Story? When was the last time this boat went out on a cruise?”

“It’s the one with Rachel Zegler, the Spielberg one, not the original,” Sam said, “But I think the songs are the same.”

“When you’re a Jet, you’re the top cat in town!” Cece sang, spreading her arms wide. “Mariaaaah! Maria, Maria, Mariahhhh!”

“What did you do with the money?” Sam asked Cece.

“What money?”

“The money your mother gave you for singing lessons.”

“Oh, ha ha. Just for that, I’m going to the ‘West Side Story’ singalong and I’m going to sing my guts out,” she said.
